Open Economy Macroeconomics

The Centre for Budget Studies, organized a four-day lecture series on “Contemporary Issues in Monetary Policy,” led by Prof. (Dr.) J. M. Ramachandran, Professor at Pondicherry University. The programme offered valuable insights into key macroeconomic concepts, combining theoretical analysis with practical relevance. The sessions focused on key macroeconomic concepts such as fiscal and monetary policy multipliers, the IS–LM model, and aggregate demand. The resource person explained how government expenditure, taxation, and money supply influence national income and economic equilibrium. The effectiveness of policies under fixed and floating exchange rate regimes was also discussed, along with Irving Fisher’s Debt-Deflation Theory. The programme also marked International Women’s Day with a symbolic tree-painting activity and tree planting to promote environmental awareness. The lecture series concluded with a retirement felicitation for Prof. Ramachandran.

Quality Quest Challenge & Standard Pitch Competition

The BIS Student Chapter at CBS, CUSAT organized the final edition of the Quality Quest Challenge (Quiz) and The Standard Pitch on 13 March 2026, in connection with World Consumer Rights Day. The event aimed to promote awareness about BIS and the importance of standardization in everyday life. An awareness session on “Safe Products, Confident Consumers” followed, featuring addresses by Dr. Elizabeth Joy and Shri Narender Reddy Beesu, along with a technical session by Smt. Hemalatha P. Panicker on product safety and BIS certification. With around 67 participants, the programme successfully fostered awareness, innovation, and analytical skills among students, making it an engaging and impactful event.

Beyond the Textbookt

On 10 February 2026, students from Dr. Ghafoor Memorial MES Mampad College did just that at the Centre for Budget Studies. Guided by Prof. (Dr.) Santhosh Kumar P.K.—an economist known for decoding complex macro-financial landscapes—the session went beyond textbooks into the frontiers of econometric modelling and asset pricing. CUSAT Knowledge Fest 2026

February 12 & 13, 2026

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) hosted a vibrant Knowledge Fest on February 12 and 13, 2026, bringing together a wide range of academic departments and institutional participants to present interactive educational exhibits. The two-day program attracted significant student participation and served as a platform to demonstrate practical applications of scientific and social knowledge. Departments like Centre for Budget Studies, Department of Applied Economics, School of Management Studies, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Kaushal Kendra (DDUKK), School of Legal Studies (SLS), Department of Marine Biology, Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemical Oceanography, Department of Hindi, School of Industrial Fisheries excited their stalls in Seminar complex. Each stall was designed to translate classroom concepts into accessible demonstrations, encouraging inquiry-based learning among visitors.

CBS at Knowledge Fest: Learning Beyond the Classroom

At the Knowledge Fest hosted by Cochin University of Science and Technology, the Centre for Budget Studies (CBS) presented an engaging academic stall combining program awareness, financial literacy, and interactive activities. A major highlight was the introduction of the upcoming Five-Year Integrated MSc in Econometrics and Data Science, with student representatives explaining its structure, interdisciplinary focus, and career prospects. CBS students also conducted an interactive session on stock market fundamentals, simplifying trading and investment concepts for a diverse audience. Quiz sessions added enthusiasm through active participation and small rewards. Parallel exhibitions within the department included a BIS Club showcase on product standards and consumer awareness, a flea market–themed simulation game on real-world decision-making, and a student-run food stall that enhanced the festive atmosphere. Through this blend of academic outreach and experiential learning, CBS meaningfully contributed to the spirit and objectives of the Knowledge Fest.
